Karen Louise Smith

Karen is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Information and a Graduate Fellow with the Knowledge Media Design Institute at the University of Toronto.  Her research interests center around: information communication technologies (ICTs), citizenship, and participation. Karen’s dissertation examines citizen participation in policy-making in Ontario.  She is particularly interested in the connections between government-led and citizen-led participation initiatives online.

Whenever possible, Karen also dabbles in creating and moderating online public participation spaces.  In 2010, she co-convened a roundtable and implemented a wiki to collaboratively author a consensus submission to the Federal Digital Economy Consultation.  In previous research projects, Karen has explored an array of cases where citizens interact with technology such as radio frequency identification in ID documents, multimedia technology in Alzheimer’s care and citizen use of health information portals.
